Ron Jon Cocoa Beach Triathlon/ Duathlon 2021

April 16, 2021 presented unusual weather…even for New England.  Slushy snow covered the ground, but nothing could cover our excitement.  School vacation and our first race for the season awaited us!  When school ended, we packed the car, loaded the bikes, and set out for Cocoa Beach, Florida.  We drove straight through the night stopping only for gas and bathroom breaks.  Saturday afternoon, Cocoa Beach was bustling with traffic due to the air show, but we headed straight to packet pick up for the Ron Jon Cocoa Beach Triathlon/ Duathlon.  Upon opening the car doors, 90 degree air welcomed our cold New England bodies.  Our first Floridian race presented several differences for us.  Even in the summer, New England races start with a chilly morning.  However, we left the hotel Sunday morning in shorts and t-shirts loving the warm weather!  The long walk from the parking lot led us to the largest transition area we had seen up to this point.  Gavin and Brody navigated the staging area to obtain their timing chips and set up their transition area.  The course was unique to us because it was flat (unlike our New England courses), we ran on a golf course, and our bodies felt the difference of the heat.  Observing the para-athletes was a wonderful experience as well!  We were impressed by their athletic prowess, determination to compete, and positive attitudes.  This race holds a special place in our minds for a couple reasons.  This was Brody’s first adult duathlon race, and he did a fantastic job!  We also had the excitement of Brody using his new road bike for the first time.  Gavin had the privilege of talking with one of the para athletes.  He approached Gavin and told him that he did a great job.  We loved this race and hope to return every year!  Out of sixty-one racers, Gavin placed fifth overall and fifth in the men’s division.  Brody placed twenty-fourth overall and sixteenth in the men’s division.  Dad, Mom, and Chase were there to help and cheer them on!
