The alarm sounded in the black of night. Dawn was nowhere in sight, but the skillet sizzled while eggs cooked. Coffee brewed for Mom while she toasted an English muffin for Gavin. Mom softly tapped on bedroom doors informing Gavin and Brody their light breakfast was ready. Although their eyes were sleepy, they quickly approached the breakfast table. Bikes were mounted in the chilly morning air while all the necessary gear was loaded into the car. At 4:46am AFR was on the road to Freedom, NH for the Live Free & Tri duathlon. After several ninety degree days, the mid-sixties temperatures felt chilly, but Gavin and Brody enjoyed the more comfortable racing conditions. The race was staged on Ossipee Lake which provided gorgeous views. Our hilly neighborhood prepared Gavin and Brody for running on this mountain-based course. This was Gavin’s first race cycling with cleats. His natural ability coupled with his cycling enhancements provided him more power on the climbs. Mom and Dad volunteered to collect timing chips which allowed them to greet Gavin and Brody as soon as they crossed the finish line. Chase faithfully rang the cowbell giving his brothers the last bit of needed motivation as they approached the finish line. Twenty-three duathletes competed in this race. Gavin placed third in the men’s division and overall; Brody placed seventh in the men’s division and eleventh overall. They continue to grow stronger and improve their times! Following the race, we enjoyed a hearty lunch at the Yankee Smoke House.
