Early Thanksgiving morning, we welcomed what we hope will be a new tradition– a Thanksgiving morning 5k turkey trot. As we approached the YMCA in Cambridge, MD memories flooded our minds. The Firecracker Kids Triathlon is held at the same location. That race will always hold a special place in our hearts for many reasons. Primarily, this was the first triathlon the boys competed in. Participating in that triathlon was always a highlight during our summer visits with family. Good friends that share a love of racing regularly joined us to watch the boys race. Without this race, the boys may have never discovered their love of racing. During the small turkey trot (we estimate about fifty people competed… dogs joined too), we enjoyed some exciting moments. Gavin felt the rush of crossing the finish line first– for the first time! He said it felt strange to have so few people at the finish line, but he was reminded that Mom ALWAYS cheers the loudest for him. Thanksgiving morning was no exception! Another exciting experience for the boys was that some of our family in Maryland were able to watch the boys race. Although the crowd was small and the race was short Thanksgiving morning, we walked away relishing old and new memories!
