Triathlons and duathlons for 2021 are done! However, we are excited for the boys to compete in a duathlon in February located in North Carolina. Snowy New England winters are not conducive to run training on the roads. Indoor equipment is a good substitute, but we wondered if there might be a better way. Dad, the brains and manager of our team, proposed that the boys compete in some 5k races throughout the cooler months to help keep them in shape. He found a 5K with a fantastic cause! Andover’s Run for the Troops 5k provides funding for veterans who need custom-built homes to meet their needs. As we approached the park, majestic flags lining the perimeter and sidewalk welcomed racers and guests. The brisk November wind caused the flags to flutter and flap while the sun illuminated the park. As racers entered the meeting area, volunteers greeted racers and offered flags. Announcements began with a recognition of present veterans, a tribute to each military branch, and a vibrant singing of the “Star Spangled Banner.” Over one thousand racers competed. Although Gavin, Brody, and Chase were placed near the back of the last group, Gavin managed to weave his way through other runners, walkers, strollers, and vehicles. This proved effective for him in the end since he placed 17 out of 1043! Additionally he placed third in his male age category (ages 15-19). Brody and Chase were in the same category, males fourteen and under. In their age category, Brody placed ninth; Chase placed fourteenth. Overall Brody placed 108, and Chase placed 280. We appreciated the cause of this race and the vast gratitude displayed for our veterans. The boys felt the race was easy (It was compared to what they are used to!), but extra training coupled with an important cause seemed like a win in our book!
