Ron Jon Triathlon: A Race of Firsts

Team AFR members reunited in Cocoa Beach, FL for the 2024 Ron Jon Triathlon.  Brody and Chase (accompanied by their parents) headed south from New England.  Gavin headed east from Pensacola, FL where he attends Pensacola Christian College.  He is majoring in mechanical engineering and minoring in physical education.  Throughout the winter, Gavin participated in…

World Triathlon: Ibiza, Spain

Words feel difficult to grasp trying to describe racing at the world championship races.  The best way to see our experiences is to watch Gavin’s video.  Check it out!  Multisport World Championships Ibiza 2023 The planning and preparation for international travel kept Dad occupied for months.  In addition to travel plans, preparation for the races…

Racine Multisports Hagerstown Duathlon April 2023

Practice with some hiccups!  While Gavin and Brody work toward training for the world championship races, race training is crucial!  One of those crucial pieces is transition practice.  Executing a seamless transition while adrenaline is pumping contributes to desired race results.  We committed to this race five months prior.  Unfortunately, we learned two days before…

Northeast Park Duathlon 2023

Northeast Park Duathlon launched not only the 2023 racing season but also Gavin’s return to racing.  After tearing his ACL in May of 2022, Gavin strived for a strong recovery with this race in his sight.  The boys prepared for the damp 40 degree forecast, but knew they needed to exercise caution on the wet…

Brody’s Bike Upgrade

With three boys racing in triathlons and duathlons from the time our oldest was seven years old, it often feels like we are purchasing at least one new bike every year.  In the spring of 2022, Brody was ready for a bigger bike.  His taking the podium in multiple adult duathlons this summer proved that…

Wallis Sands 2022

Race mornings often hit hard!  Forcing the body to awaken.  Race-day jitters.  Racking bikes.  Convincing the body it needs nutrition and energy.  All this followed by a long drive.  However, the Wallis Sands Triathlon-Duathlon offers some perks!  The drive is shorter than most races, but we still arrive in the dark.  Once the boys check…

Maryland Cycling Classic 2022

We closed out the summer of 2022 with an amazing opportunity by attending the Maryland Cycling Classic over Labor Day Weekend!  This was the only UCI Pro-Series race hosted in the United States.  Four of the 16 teams participating were world tour teams– Team BikeExchange-Jayco, EF Education-EasyPost, Israel-Premier Tech, and Trek-Segafredo!  The weekend kicked off…

Live Free and Tri 2022

Live Free and Tri is one of our favorite races!  The course is set in scenic Freedom, NH on Ossipee Lake which provides gorgeous mountain vistas.  Brody and Chase competed in the sprint duathlon which consisted of a 2 mile run, a 10.83 mile bike, and a 3.1 mile run.  Volunteering on the bike course,…

The Wolf Tri 2022

Not only is The Wolf Tri a new race, but this was Chase’s first adult sprint duathlon.  Mom prepared Brody and Chase’s breakfast while Dad packed the car.  Around 5:00am, we hit the road for Wolfeboro, NH.  After unracking the bikes, Dad discovered one of Brody’s tires had a flat.  Thankfully Philbricks’ staff was onsite…

Dam Sprint Triathlon + Duathlon

Since the majority of our races are at least an hour from home, one of the things we love about the Dam Sprint Triathlon + Duathlon is how close to home it is!  This affords us the opportunity to attend packet pick-up the evening before the race.  Gavin’s ACL injury placed him in a coaching…
